GROW ADA PARTICIPATES IN ADA CITIZENS POLICE ACADEMY

May 20, 2026 by Daniel Castaneda

Carol Ervin recently graduated from the Ada Police Department’s Citizens Police Academy, a community outreach program designed to give residents a behind-the-scenes look at how local law enforcement operates day-to-day. Throughout the academy, participants were introduced to several areas of law enforcement, including patrol operations, criminal investigations, intoxicated persons, use of force, the District Attorney’s Office, the Drug Task Force, and the department’s Special Response Team. The program also included hands-on, interactive experiences that gave participants a deeper understanding of the realities officers face in the field.

Ervin shared that two of the most memorable parts of the academy were the tactical training night and crime scene investigation night — experiences that are consistently among participants’ favorites. According to Captain Jones, these sessions give attendees a realistic look into the training, decision-making, and responsibilities officers navigate during high-pressure situations. One of the academy’s biggest goals is to help community members better understand the limitations, policies, and legal requirements law enforcement officers work under every day. Captain Jones noted that many citizens see only a small portion of what policing truly involves, often through brief personal interactions or portrayals in media and online.

“It puts a name to a face for our officers and lets people better understand they are people too and not just an authoritarian behind a badge,” Jones said.

Beyond education, the program is designed to strengthen relationships between law enforcement and the community through open conversation and engagement. Participants are encouraged to ask questions, discuss concerns, and gain a broader understanding of the department’s role in serving the community. For Grow Ada, participation in programs like the Citizens Police Academy aligns with its commitment to supporting a stronger, more connected Ada. Building trust and communication between local organizations, residents, and public safety agencies contributes directly to the quality of life and continued growth of the community.

The Ada Police Department plans to host another Citizens Police Academy in Fall 2026. Community members interested in participating are encouraged to watch for future announcements from the department.
