East Central University
East Central University if a public university offering Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Arts, and Master's degrees. East Central has 35 undergraduate and 8 graduate degree programs. Over 5,700 students enroll at ECU each semester. The student body is made up of students from 24 countries and 25 different states.
ECU maintains a 20:1 student teacher ratio and has over 260 faculty members. Faculty members are involved throughout each step of a student's college experience, serving as academic advisors or as sponsors for student organizations.
Single students have the following housing options, four traditional residence halls or one apartment style residence hall. ECU has an apartment style complex for adult and married students as well. Students are required to live on campus their freshman year unless they are married, have dependents, live with their parent or guardian, are over the age of 21, have over 24 hours earned post high school, or are enrolled in less than 9 hours.
Students have access to 26 computer labs on campus, as well a state-of-the-art Wellness Center. Over 80 student organizations are active on campus. Students can also participate in intramural or collegiate sports on campus. Students also have access to a variety of dining options on campus.
East Central University was established in 1909 as a normal school. Each normal school provided preparatory education including two years of college leading to teacher certification. In 1919 all six of the state’s normal schools became teachers’ colleges and bachelor’s degrees were conferred. In 1939, East Central University received designation as a state college when it began offering Art and Science degrees. In 1954, East Central University was authorized to begin offering graduate degree programs..
East Central University is the alma mater of many distinguished people in our state and national history. Three governors graduated from East Central: former Oklahoma Governor Robert S. Kerr, former Oklahoma Governor George Nigh, and former Arizona Governor Ernest McFarland. East Central University is proud to claim Dr. Gil Morgan, winner of 30 PGA tour events, and Clifford Thrift, ECU All-American Linebacker and part of the 1986 Super Bowl Champion Chicago Bears. Kevin Turner is also a graduate of East Central University. Mr. Turner was the youngest person to become Vice President of Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. In 2005, Mr. Turner became the Chief Operating Officer for Microsoft Corporation.
